So, is this meeting only for people participating in the Show? Or will it be a more general social night?

Its not really a social night, it is a chance for the students who are performing at the "Snow Ball" to learn and practice their choreography.

However, as Kitty Von Paw has stated, you (and indeed anyone) are welcome to come along if you want to meet some of us.

Hello  Wink

Spiro, the particular song IS a swing song - there is no question about it. It is a 4-beat (8 count) jazz song and its always danced as a Lindy hop routine. The fact that comes from 1961 (at least the version by R. Charles we're using) doesn't make it any less swing than American Patrol by Glenn Miller!

Given that there are so many of you that want to do the Lindy, we need to have two choreographies - and also we need to keep EVERYONE happy! Don't forget that there are a few people that prefer neo-swing than the retro style, or Jazz swing like the song we're using. The second choreography is based on a 'proper' Lindy Hop song. In this way, all of you will learn extra, very useful stuff, but still have the choice to decide which song you want to dance to. It was more than clear last night that the majority of people got very happy and excited with the 'Hit the Road Jack'.

You can always choose to dance to the 2nd song, I do believe its more you anyway Smiley

Well done again for last night, and thank you.

Kitty Von Paw spent a lot of time carefully choosing this song, and creating a choreography to go with it.

From my own point of view, there are a few advantages to using this song. Since this song is very famous, everybody knows the music and lyrics already. I think this has advantages when trying to learn and remember the choreography. For example when the chorus is about to start, you will (hopefully) remember that you will soon need to be side by side, with the follower ready to tuck-turn out etc..., and since you probably already have known the song for years, you will instinctively "know" when the chorus is coming up, and where you need to be at that point in the choreography.
Additionally, there are a couple of unique "dialogue lines" near the end of the song, which will help with timing the final "moves", which make things a bit easier.

Finally, there are a couple of highlights in the music, which not only complement the choreograpghy visually, but which also reinforce the idea that the dancer is exactly on cue (hopefully), for example, when everyone points their hands up at the end of the "big apple" changer over (aka min-dip).

I myself (and Kitty Von Paw) prefer classic retro swing from the 30's and 40's. However, Kitty Von Paw has worked hard to create something that will :

a) make use of as many of the moves that everybody has learned as possible
b) be fun and relatively easy to learn and remember
c) to look visually pleasing/entertaining to the spectators

I think she has done a great job in meeting all of the above criteria.

Ben.
